Jammaldeen.jpg

Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s “Philly Improv Society” is a musical collective of Philadelphia-based intergenerational artists who uphold the tradition of improvised and creative music pioneered by African American musicians such as Ahmad Jamal, Odean Pope, Byard Lancaster, Rasheed Ali, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, and others. Jamaaladeen assembles not only musicians but also recording engineers who are also masters at capturing the distinctive voices of improvisers in live recording settings, whether in a studio or on stage. Capturing these fleeting moments is an art form in its own right, comparable to that of the musicians who embark on these sonic explorations.

Currently led by Tacuma, the collective aims to foster a fluid membership that will evolve and expand beyond his individual presence in the future.

Jamaaladeen Tacuma presents his latest project, “The Philly Improv Society,” Episode 1 MOVING FORWARD featuring United Kingdom composer and experimental artist Massimo Magee alongside Philadelphia-based artists Julius Masri, Terry Lawson, Kevin Diehl, and Doug Hirlinger and Jamaaladeen Tacuma , recorded by rising star music engineer Michael Cummings at his studio Retro Sound Studio in Philadelphia.
